Human Rights
The EU is a firm promoter and defender of human rights and democracy, which are enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights and Charter of Fundamental Rights. Pursuant to the Lisbon Treaty, it further commits to these values on which its foundation is based through its external action and policy. Human rights are universal, indivisible and interdependent, and the respect for them is essential for addressing the global challenges intertwined with them such as digital technologies and climate change.
Guided by its Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy, the EU — in partnership with government agencies, NGOs, academia and youth leaders across ASEAN — carries out activities that seek to protect and empower individuals; build resilient, inclusive and democratic societies; promote a global system for human rights and democracy; address challenges and harness opportunities with new technologies; and deliver by working together. Rights and freedoms around sensitive topics such as LGBTIQ equality and the death penalty are conveyed through film, art and dance, and discussed and debated in organised forums.
