Cine Europa celebrates 25 years of cultural exchange through film in the Philippines
Marking its Silver Anniversary, the EU’s longest running film festival in the Philippines screens 30 critically acclaimed films from 29 European countries to audiences nationwide
From September to October 2022, the EU Delegation to the Philippines (EUD) launched its flagship event to share European culture through film, in collaboration with EU Member States and institutions such as the Cultural Centre of the Philippines (CCP).
This year’s festival made a splash in Metro Manila along with each of the major island groups of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, with outdoor screenings, bike-ins and walk-ins. Films and other events were also featured virtually, attracting over 11 000 views on-site and online alongside extensive international, regional and national media coverage.
The nationwide reach of the event served to bridge the EU closer to local communities, not only vis-à-vis the general public but also with local governments and the private sector. Each year, Cine Europa acts as a dynamic platform for the exchange of ideas, through EU-Philippine dialogue and institutional partnerships for the promotion of arts and culture.
The event extends its stage to Philippine directors, writers and actors, through special workshops that enable those driving the local industry to share their own stories.
Recent years have seen a surge in interest in European film in the Philippines, with Cine Europa’s following on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram nearly tripling since 2020.
