Europe Day celebrated in ASEAN with month-long campaign
Online activities promote better understanding of EU and foster engagement with ASEAN youth
The EU Delegations to Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam (EUDs) marked Europe Day with a month-long online campaign in May 2020, as COVID-19 confined people indoors around the world.
A one-minute Europe Day video explaining the past, present and future of the EU as well as its relations with ASEAN was launched and disseminated through the EUDs’ social media platforms.
The EUDs hosted four online quizzes on general knowledge about the EU, European education and culture, EU and the environment, and European heritage buildings in Bangkok, the last of which was held in partnership with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. The quizzes attracted the participation of more than 1 000 people.
Joining in the celebration were 10 ASEAN youth representatives, who shared their thoughts on what the EU means for them and for ASEAN. Their video clips were published on the Facebook page of ASEAN Youth Organization (AYO).
In an interview with AYO, H.E. Ms Barbara Plinkert, EU Ambassador to Singapore, explained that Europe Day, celebrated every year on 9 May, marks the Schuman declaration of 1950. ‘It really is an expression of the union's core values of peace, unity and solidarity. These values became even more important this year as we struggle through a global crisis,’ she said.
