EU and Malaysian changemakers express hopes at the crossroads of COP 27
The world looks to the future as local, state and federal authorities step up their actions in the race against the climate clock.
Protecting our planet for future generations requires strong common global action, and Malaysians have an active role to play in shaping their national commitments at COP.
The EU Delegation to Malaysia (EUD) released the video 'At the Crossroads: COP 27 and Climate Change' on 10 November 2022 — the day the world convened in Sharm El-Sheikh — to underline the challenges and opportunities on the path ahead for ambitious climate action in Malaysia.
The video features messages of hope from European and Malaysian leaders in government, industry and media who are among the movers and shakers at COP. Their voices are in unison that Malaysia’s target of carbon neutrality by 2050 requires not only cooperation from the private sector and civil society, but also policies and regulations that steer the structural change needed to reach this aim.
'Government initiative in creating the conditions necessary to implement COP decisions is key', says EU Ambassador to Malaysia H.E. Michalis Rokas. 'The EU is prepared to offer all of its support towards this end as it works closely with the Malaysian Government.'
‘Climate change is about action’, emphasises Mr Roger Chan Weng Keng, Chair of the Environment and Climate Change Committee Bar Council of Malaysia. ‘If you don’t have the action, I’m afraid the future may not be promising.’
In the lead-up to COP 27, the EU and its Member States urged the international community to be much more ambitious in fulfilling their obligations under the Paris Agreement. Global emissions must be cut by 30 gigatonnes annually before 2030 for the temperature rise to remain below the 1.5 °C threshold and avert catastrophic consequences. Malaysia is a strategic partner to the EU in working together in the shared battle against time.
At the Crossroads is the last in a five-part video series themed ‘Learn to Live Again: Steps Towards Sustainability.’ The videos collectively expose the impacts of climate change in Malaysia and spell out the solutions that can help mitigate and adapt for the survival of future generations.
